Birth and Marriage Registration Forms Invade Personal Privacy

Recently there have been complaints about the overly specific registration forms for birth and marriage as they violate personal privacy.

When registering one’s new born into the national census, not only are basic details required but also unnecessary information that is rather invasive to personal life and privacy such as the applicant’ place of birth, professions, and even academic records. The applications even ask the “duration of residing with a partner” or whether the one has remarried. Upon submission, the details are delivered to the Statistics Korea (the national ministry handling statistics) for data collection and usage, although the names and profile are removed after a month.

While basic information such as personal registration numbers or place of residence may be crucial in birth and marriage registration forms, a number of fields are clearly unnecessary and probes in one’s personal and private life. There is clearly a need for reevaluation and recompilation of the application forms both of which are vital to the day to day life of ordinary citizens.
